#1 – What Your Charity Needs To Start Fundraising On Facebook And How To Apply For The Tools?

So you can start collecting donations on Facebook, your charity must have a verified and reviewed page that is listed as either a ‘’Non-profit organisation’’ or a ‘’charitable organisation’’.

Also, you will need to fill out an application form to create something called your donations account. Once submitted, it will usually take between 2-3 weeks for your application to be reviewed.

The three things you will need to complete the application is:

  • A copy of the charities bank statement for the past three months (this will need to be uploaded alongside the application). If you send a statement that’s older than three months, it will cause a delay in your application.
  • The name and date of birth of your charities CEO.
  • Your charities VAT number, which verifies your charitable tax exemption status.

 

Make sure you have all of this information to hand before you start filling out the application as there isn’t the option to save the document as you go along.

To start the process you need to click the down arrow next to your charities Facebook page, then proceed to ‘’Donations account setup’’.

#2 – How Do I Request A Verification Badge For My Charities Facebook Page?

The badge will let members of the public know your page is the official page of the charity and it’s not a spam or fake account.

Your page also needs to be verified so you can apply for a donations account (explained in FAQ 1) this is required so you can activate the Giving Tools.

So what needs to be in place to verify your page so you can acquire that lovely little tick?

To start with you must be an admin of your charities page. The page itself needs to:

      • Be published.
      • Have a profile picture and a cover image.
      • Have posts on it.

     

Then to verify your page, you need to:

  • Click on the settings at the top of your page.
  • From the general section, select the Page Verification option.
  • Then you need to click on Verify this Page.
  • Add the charities phone number, your country and language.
  • Click on the Call Me Now button to allow Facebook to call you with a verification code.
  • Then enter the 4 digit verification code and select continue.
  • If you prefer to verify your page using documentation, like a bill for example. Then all you need to do is follow the steps above and click Verify this page with documents instead at the bottom left of the window that shows.
  • (If you are verifying your page with documentation) You then upload an image of an official piece of documentation which states your charities name and address. Once Facebook has received the verification code or charities official documentation, they will then review all of the information and cross reference against public records. You will be notified about the verification status within a few days.

#3 – What Are The Facebook Giving Tools?

  • Donate Button– any charity can add a donate button to the header of their page or ads which direct people to a donate page on their website. Eligible charities (find out if your eligible and how to apply in FAQ 4 below) can add a donate button to page posts, page headers and live videos so people can donate directly to your charity through Facebook.
  • Fundraisers – people can now raise money for your charity on Facebook. Your supporters can set up a dedicated page to share their story, tell others about your mission and rally around a fundraising goal, only charities based in certain countries are eligible to apply.

#4 – How Does My Charity Qualify For The Facebook Fundraising Tools?

The Facebook Fundraising and donations tools are only available to charities in certain locations, please find a list of all of the qualifying countries at the bottom of this FAQ.

To make sure your charity can use the tools, the organisation must meet the following criteria:

  • For charities based in the US, they need to: be a 501(c)(3) organisation, ensure they are registered with the IRS, and have a tax ID number as well as a bank account registered with a licensed financial services institution.
  • Provide a VAT number (if it is applicable), a charity registration number (where applicable), a charity registration document issued or approved by a government entity and a bank account registered with a licensed financial services institution.
  • Your charity needs to be in one of the following countries to be eligible: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Sweden, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom, United States.

#5 – How To Find And View Your Facebook Giving Transaction Reports And Donor Information?

If your charity receives donations through the Facebook Giving Tools or the Donate button then these steps will help you to find your transaction reports:

  • Step 1 – Select the Publishing Tools located at the top of your charities page.
  • Step 2 – Click on the ”Donation Settings” button which can be found to the left of the page.
  • Step 3 – Select ”Download Donation reports”.
  • Step 4 – Click the report you would like to download.

There are three report options. There is the Payout Report, this report shows the funds that will be transferred into your account. There is the Daily Transaction Report which includes detailed information on each donation made to your organisation, stating whether the donation was through the donate button or through a fundraiser. This report includes fields such as First name, Surname, Amount donated and Email address (if the donor decides to share it). They will download as .csv files.

  • Step 5 – Then select which time frame you would like your report to cover, then click download.

 

*Don’t forget it takes 48 hours from when a transaction happens to when it will populate in a report.

#6 – Can I Get Notified When A New Facebook Fundraiser Signs Up To Support My Charity?

Facebook doesn’t have this feature but GivePanel can notify you of new Facebook Fundraisers. #7 – How Do I Add The Donate Button To My Charities Facebook Page?

To add a donate button to your charities Facebook page you need to:

  • Open up your charities Facebook page (you need to be a page admin)
  • Select ”add a button” If you’re just looking to change the text, click on edit the button to amend the text.
  • Then select ”shop with you or make a donation”, then click on donate and click next.
  • Select donate through Facebook. Click Finish.

 

Don’t forget your charity has to be signed up for Facebook Payments so people can donate directly through Facebook. Please find earlier FAQs (FAQ 1,2 and 4) on if your charity is eligible and how to apply.

(This feature is gradually rolling out to non-profit Pages and may not be available to you right now)

#8 – How Do I Set Up A Fundraiser For My Charities Facebook Page?

All you need to do to create a fundraiser for your charities Facebook Page is:

  • Click on the fundraisers section in the menu on the left of your News Feed.
  • Select Raise Money
  • Select your Charity as the one who is organising the fundraiser.
  • Find your charity, upload a cover photo and fill in the details.
  • Select create.

 

The Facebook Fundraising tools aren’t available in every country – you can find out if they are available in your country by visiting FAQ 4 and what you need to do to activate the tools in FAQ 1.

#9 – How To Thank Your Wonderful Facebook Fundraisers?

If your charities Facebook page is on-boarded to Facebook Payments, Page Admins can thank fundraisers who set up a page with a thank you post directly onto their fundraiser page.

Here is how:

  • Select the ”Fundraisers” tab located to left side of your nonprofit’s Facebook Page.
  • Select the Fundraiser you wanted to thank.
  • You can now write a post on their fundraising page where it says ”write something”.
  • Click post.

#10 – How Do I Contact Facebook Support For Help With The Giving Tools?

#11 – Are Donations On Facebook Eligible For Gift Aid?

Your donation might qualify for Gift Aid if the person who has made the donation is a taxpayer in the United Kingdom and the recipient charity is UK based charity.

While the donor is making their donation, they will be able to state if their donation is eligible for Gift Aid.

UK charities can find their Gift Aid transaction information within the transaction report. Within the report, there will be a column called ”Gift Aid” which will state ‘Yes’ if the donation is eligible for Gift Aid or ”No” if the donation isn’t eligible for gift aid.

HMRC have voiced concerns over the audit trail. The Charity Tax Group, HMRC and Facebook are currently in discussions about this and we will share updates when we have them. The Charity Tax Group publishes their latest news on this here.

#12 – Does Facebook Process Gift Aid For My Charity

Facebook will only show information on Gift Aid if it applies, it doesn’t process Gift Aid Claims. If your charity is signed up to PayPal Giving Fund and receives donations via Facebook, the Gift Aid will be processed automatically by PayPal Giving Fund.

#13 – Why Doesn’t My Facebook Page Have A Donate Button

Facebook no longer enables nonprofits to add donate buttons that link off to external websites, outside of Facebook. Nonprofits can only add the donate button to their organisations page if they have signed up to Facebook Payments.
