What is DIY fundraising and how does it work for charities?
DIY fundraising – also called supporter-led or ‘fundraise your way’ fundraising – is when supporters choose their own challenge and raise money in their own way, rather than signing up for a specific charity-organised event. This could be a birthday fundraiser, a personal running goal, an in-memory tribute, a bake sale, or anything else a supporter decides to do. For charities, it creates a year-round income stream that runs without needing to organise individual events. The challenge is capturing and stewarding supporters at scale, across a huge variety of challenge types and timelines. Read our guide for more inspiration ->
How do charities manage year-round supporter-led fundraising without it becoming overwhelming?
The short answer: automation. Manual DIY programmes typically fall apart at scale because every supporter has a different challenge, a different event date, and a different timeline – which makes personal outreach impossible to manage consistently. GivePanel’s DIY product automates the key moments: registration confirmation, prompts to create a fundraising page, milestone messages, and pre-event encouragement. Emails trigger based on each supporter’s individual event date and fundraising progress, not a shared campaign calendar. That means personal, timely communication without anyone on your team manually tracking who needs what.
How do you capture supporters who start fundraising for your charity without registering?
Some supporters create a JustGiving fundraising page for your charity directly on JustGiving – without going through your registration form. GivePanel’s Smart Match technology captures these supporters automatically. After your daily JustGiving data import, Smart Match identifies fundraisers by event type (running, cycling, bake sales, and so on) and links them to your DIY campaign, so they appear in your data alongside registered supporters. Your team gets a complete picture of your DIY programme, including the supporters you didn’t know about.
What is Smart Match and how does it work?
Smart Match is GivePanel’s proprietary technology for capturing JustGiving-direct supporters – people who create a fundraising page for your charity on JustGiving without registering through a GivePanel form. It works by matching newly imported JustGiving fundraiser data to your active DIY campaigns based on event type. Smart Match runs automatically after each daily JustGiving import. Matched supporters appear in your GivePanel account and can be stewarded through the same email journeys as your registered supporters.
Can DIY fundraisers choose their own type of challenge?
Yes. GivePanel’s DIY campaigns support a wide range of event types – running, cycling, walking, swimming, gaming, bake sales, in-memory fundraising, and more. Supporters select their event type when they register, and GivePanel uses this to match them to the right email journey and (for JustGiving) to Smart Match them if they created a page directly. DIY campaign dashboards can also segment performance by event type, so your team can see which types of supporter-led fundraising are performing best across your programme.
How do email journeys work when every supporter has a different event date?
DIY email journeys support personal event date triggers – so emails can send based on each supporter’s own event start and end date, not a campaign-wide date. This means a supporter running a marathon in March and a supporter doing a bake sale in September both get their pre-event reminder at the right time for them individually. You set the journey logic once; GivePanel handles the scheduling for every supporter based on their own timeline.
Is GivePanel’s DIY product suitable for in-memory and tribute fundraising?
Yes. In-memory and tribute fundraising is one of the most common DIY use cases. Supporters create a fundraising page in memory of someone they’ve lost, on their own timeline, with their own personal story. GivePanel captures these supporters through registration or via Smart Match for JustGiving-direct pages, and your team can steward them sensitively through the same email journey infrastructure – with personalisation that makes every communication feel individual rather than automated.
